Learn about the art, science, history, and practice of hide tanning. This program is designed to demonstrate each step of the bark tanning (also known as vegetable tanning) process, including fresh hide storage and preservation, fleshing, dehairing, preparing tanning solution from natural materials, and working the tanned hide into finished leather. The program will briefly discuss other types of tanning methods, from traditional brain tanning to commercial,chemical tanning. The goal of this class is to introduce naturalists, hunters, homesteaders, and crafters to the world of hide tanning, and to provide the knowledge and resources needed for participants to further cultivate these skills on their own.
