Cape Ann, Massachusetts, is a worldwide destination for winter birds and birders. This annual winter adventure is an outstanding opportunity to spend quality time with species rarely, if ever, seen in Vermont. This trip is not only about discovering rare species by land and sea, but about watching, enjoying, and studying seabirds among a community of like-minded nature lovers under the leadership of a first-class guide and educator.
We’ll depart NBNC on Thursday morning to head down to Gloucester, MA to search for coastal rarities such as Iceland and Glaucous Gulls, King Eiders, Northern Gannets, Harlequin Ducks, and more. On Friday, we’ll continue our exploration the beaches, jetties, bays of Gloucester and Rockport to encounter hard-to-find offshore regulars like Razorbills, Dovekies, Common and Thick-billed Murres, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Atlantic Puffins, Dovekies, Scoters, and Skuas. On our way back north on Saturday, we’ll explore nearby hotspots such as Salisbury Beach or Plum Island for species like Snowy Owls, Rough-legged Hawks, and Purple Sandpipers. Our exact route and destinations are flexible, and will depend on recent sightings and weather conditions. We arrive back in Montpelier on Saturday late afternoon.
For meals, we’ll have quick breakfasts at local diners, grab sandwiches for lunch from Gloucester delis, and sit down for nice dinners at favorite local restaurants.
Our lodging is a basic, clean and comfortable oceanside hotel/motel.
