The Wildcrafting Skills Circle is a place for youth 13+ to learn ancestral skills, connect with peers, and explore their creativity. Each session is led by NBNC naturalist educators who will guide students through a different skill. Students will take their project home with them at the end of each program. No crafting experience is necessary. All supplies are provided.

Week One (Feb 8) – Weaving with Natural Materials (1-4 pm): Learn to weave natural materials into art. Naturalists Ana Maria Arroyo and Victoria Lee will guide students through fiber processing and basic weaving techniques to create their own baskets or wall hangings, sharing songs and telling stories as we work. This program takes place indoors.

Week Two (March 15) – Wood Carving with Fire (1-4 pm): Join us around a fire as we use the power of flames to make bowls. We will prepare our wood, then carefully use hot coals to burn it into a cup. Expect to spend the entire program around a fire in the forest, enjoying stories, songs, and company. Led by Dave Muska and Ana Maria Arroyo.

Week Three (April 12) – Spoon Carving Basics (1-5 pm): Learn the basics of safe knife carving technique, then spend the session working on your own spoon, butter knife, or other wooden utensil. Led by Ken Benton. Participants are welcome (but not required) to bring their own knives. This session will be outdoors.
