This event is appropriate for naturalists, gardeners and explorers both young and old. May not be appropriate for the more casually interested young children.
With specialized light bulbs and a few white sheets, The Caterpillar Lab’s moth lighting station turns the NBNC quad into Vermont’s single greatest concentration of biodiversity for one special evening. The station will attract hundreds of insects for us to enjoy, including seldom-seen moth species decorated in ornate patterns and strange shapes. The Caterpillar Lab’s staff will guide us on an investigation of our awe-inspiring nocturnal neighbors: the huge, tiny, regal, absurd, furry, shiny, gorgeous, perplexing, audacious and outrageous moths that Vermont has to offer!
The program begins at 8 pm with an indoor introduction and brief caterpillar hunt as the sun sets. We’ll have our first arrivals shortly after dusk, but the abundance and diversity at the moth station will increase throughout the night, especially after 9 pm.
