Intermediate Winter Wildlife Tracking
February 25, 2023 @ 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Join NBNC naturalist and wildlife tracker Dave Muska for a full day of tracking and trailing wildlife, aimed at participants already holding some basic knowledge of track and sign identification. We’ll start in the classroom to review the tracks, gaits, habitats, and signs of species we might encounter on the late winter landscape. We’ll then head out on the land to search for sign and explore the who, what, where, when, why and how of animal tracks.
We’ll ponder tracking mysteries and immerse in the tracking process, examining techniques such as track journaling, track measurement, gait analysis, trailing, adopting a focal species, camera trapping, and more. Towards the end of the day, you’ll have the opportunity to apply your tracking skills to a series of track and sign questions, which you will first explore individually and then take up as a group.
Participants will walk away with
In-depth information about winter wildlife tracks and sign.
A clearer sense of your personal tracking process, plus new strategies to strengthen that process.
A set of practices and routines to build your tracking toolbox throughout the seasons.
