Macrophotography: A Naturalist’s Perspective with Joseph Saunders – Naturalist Journeys Online Presentation Series
November 11 @ 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
In this presentation, Joseph will give you a new perspective and appreciation for the macrofauna of our world. Through his experiences as a naturalist and photographer, Joseph will empower you with the tools and techniques to better notice, appreciate, observe, and photograph the minuscule in nature. He’ll share camera settings, knowledge of animal behavior, tips on finding subjects, and post-processing techniques (like focus stacking) to overcome some of the unique challenges in macrophotography. Joseph is excited and grateful to spend time with more people who value the tiny things in our world!
About the Presenter
Like many, my life as a naturalist began early. Growing up in San Antonio, the most fascinating and accessible wild animal was the green anole, Anolis carolinenses. It would be years later before I learned what a “herper” was, and what herpetology is. Yet long before learning the many ologies of natural sciences, I’ve had, from a very early age, a powerful empathy for the persecuted among us.
About eight years ago, I was advised that a macro lens would improve my photography of small reptiles. With practice, I learned that this tool didn’t only enlarge a snake or lizard, it could even fill the frame with the head of a field cricket. This realization opened a new pathway, beckoning me to take a closer look at a world that was always adjacent to the one I was most familiar with. Since that moment, I have been happy to add “arthrophile” to the ways I might describe myself.
Being a life-long paraplegic, the accessibility and abundance of arthropods has provided me with more opportunities and experiences as a wildlife photographer than I otherwise might have had without macrophotography.
