The United Arab Emirates, famous for its oil reserves, flashy skyscrapers, and man-made Palm Islands, is also home to wide open spaces and desert landscapes brimming with life. In this virtual camping trip, we’ll turn the clock back to 2000, to explore the biodiversity of the region, from scorpions to desert wildflowers blooming after rain. We’ll see how water shapes the natural setting, from the bedrock on up.
Erika Mitchell is a nature enthusiast, researcher, and science writer living in Central Vermont. An avid photographer, she spends her free time documenting the distribution of species on iNaturalist and eBird. She and her husband, Seth Frisbie, were professors at Zayed University from 1998-2003, where they enjoyed many seasons camping in the wild in the United Arab Emirates and neighboring Oman.
