Cape Ann, Massachusetts, is a worldwide destination for winter birds and birders. This annual winter adventure is an outstanding opportunity to spend quality time with seabirds along the Atlantic coast. This trip is about watching, enjoying, and studying seabirds among a community of like-minded nature lovers under the leadership of a first-class guide and educator.
We’ll depart NBNC on Friday morning to head down to Gloucester, MA to search for coastal regulars and rarities as Razorbills, Northern Gannets, Harlequin Ducks, Dovekies, Common and Thick-billed Murres, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Atlantic Puffins, Dovekies, Scoters, and Skuas. Depending on where birds are being reported, we may visit productive destinations on the way to Cape Ann, such as Salisbury Beach and Plum Island, where birds like Snowy Owls, Rough-legged Hawks, and Purple Sandpipers tend to reside in the winter.
On Saturday and Sunday, we’ll visit a series of peninsulas and points around Rockport and Gloucester that overlook the ocean, where we are likely to encounter scoters, sea ducks, alcids, and other typically-offshore seabirds. We’ll spend time at local harbors and jetties where Glaucous and Iceland Gulls tend to turn up, and visit sheltered ponds in search of waterfowl like Blue-winged teal, Brandt, Gadwall, and Scaup. We arrive back in Montpelier on Sunday afternoon.
Led by Birding Ambassador and NBNC Executive Director Emeritus, Chip Darmstadt.
Includes: 2 nights lodging, all transportation, shared spotting scopes, and expert bird guide.
